Well first off it’s good to see another person interested in and wanting to know more about IT automation. Secondly since your asking for advice I’ll give you some. Having gone through the transition myself a couple of years ago I can tell you that you, as well as all the members of your team need to do as much research as possible. I know that your company may be pressuring all of you into making a quick decision and implementation but you really have to buy as much time as possible. There’s nothing as bad choosing the wrong automation tools because then not only will you have to go through the entire process again but you’ll have to deal with all kinds of problems such as security issues, bugs, etc while you take care of server provisioning and work out what to do next.

Great piece with excellent analysis - I enjoyed reading it. You didn't really mention size of vendors or status as a company. Here is my perspective: Solidcore, is just a startup, focus is mostly on security, few customers. Most of their business seems to be locking down ATM machines and cash registers. (They claim Opsware resells them, but the rep we spoke with didn't seem to know anything about them). Tripwire has been a compliance vendor and is now doing well in IT Operations, claims about 6,000 customers. They also have configuration assesment and can manage both infrastructure and applications which seems pretty cool. (BMC resells them). Ecora has a lot of smb customers and just does reporting on config settings. Hope that adds some colour. - Bob

I was at a seminar today sponsored by a company called Tripwire. There were some other customers there that were using Tripwire with the BMC tools and they were getting better ROI from the BMC tools because the can enforce that people are really using the tools and process the right way. The guy from Tripwire told us they were already integrated with Realops from befor BMC bought it. I think it was at AT&T or some such. That might be a good thing for BMC or one of the other pweople you mentioned to buy.
